James Houston, 67, of West Haverstraw, New York, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on February 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Though his passing was sudden, the love he gave and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
James is survived by his loving and devoted partner, Catherine Burch; his beloved children: James Houston, Catherine Houston, Ryan Houston, Cheyanne Houston, Jordan Houston, Michael Houston, Gerald Houston, Marcus Houston, Maria Houston, James Houston, and Danielle Houston; and his devoted stepchildren, Antonio and Jeanette. He also leaves behind countless cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
He is survived by his brothers, Sterling and Christopher; his sister, Cindy Lou Houston; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
James was predeceased by his beloved son, Christopher Houston; his mother, Geraldine; and his father, James Houston.
James proudly served his country in the United States military, earning medals for marksmanship and sharpshooting. Following his military service, he continued to serve his community as a dedicated police officer in the Village of Haverstraw.
For the past 33 years, James shared his life with Catherine Burch. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family.
James found his greatest happiness in his family. He delighted in watching his grandchildren participate in sports—baseball, football, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, and jiu-jitsu. He loved fishing, racing, barbecuing, and spending time outdoors. A loyal fan of the New York Mets and the Dallas Cowboys, he also enjoyed trips to Englishtown, New Jersey, to see Robo Saurus and Monster Jam.
He cherished teaching his grandchildren how to fish, hit a baseball, throw a football, tackle, and practice jiu-jitsu and, most importantly, the values of sportsmanship and kindness. Family time was precious to him, and there was never a dull moment when James was around; he brought energy, laughter, and love to every gathering.
Funeral services will be held at TJ McGowan March 7, 2026 From 2:00pm - 6:00pm, 133 Broadway, Haverstraw, NY 10927.
James will be lovingly remembered for his strength, his unwavering devotion, and the immense love he shared with his family.
“Those we love never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they shared, the love they brought, and the memories we hold in our hearts.”
